Youri Tielemans to Man United: £35m Move Confirmed

Manchester United have agreed a deal to sign Belgium captain Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa after triggering the release clause in his contract, transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano confirmed on Monday.

What Happened?

According to Romano, Manchester United activated a release clause worth around €41 million (about £35 million) written into Tielemans' Aston Villa contract. Romano wrote that a verbal agreement is also in place with the player himself. The Athletic's David Ornstein first reported that talks were at an advanced stage, adding that Villa had offered Tielemans a new contract but could not stop the move once the clause was triggered.

Sky Sports reporter Samuel Luckhurst added that Tielemans is expected to undergo a medical on Tuesday before signing his contract at Old Trafford. Some outlets have put the total package as high as £40 million once add-ons are included, though the core figure reported by most sources sits at £35 million.

Why United Moved for Tielemans

The transfer comes after Manchester United walked away from a separate deal for Atalanta midfielder Ederson, who had already completed part of his medical before the move collapsed. United reportedly grew cautious after a closer medical review, and Ederson has since left England.

United's midfield has been thin this summer. Casemiro left after his contract expired, and Manuel Ugarte is out for a long spell after injuring his knee ligaments at the World Cup. Manager Michael Carrick had identified Tielemans as an experienced, ready-made option to fill the gap. The move is also expected to arrive alongside the signing of Andrey Santos from Chelsea, giving United two fresh midfield additions this window.

Tielemans' Case

The 29-year-old was a key player for Aston Villa last season, helping the club win the Europa League and qualify for the Champions League, while contributing two goals and seven assists across all competitions. He arrived at Villa from Leicester City, where he spent six seasons and won the FA Cup in 2021, scoring the winning goal in the final against Chelsea.

Tielemans also captained Belgium at the 2026 World Cup, scoring twice in a dramatic Round of 32 win over Senegal. He missed Belgium's quarter-final against Spain after picking up a muscle strain in the warm-up.

What Happens Next

Tielemans is due to have his medical with Manchester United on Tuesday, July 14. If it goes smoothly, an official announcement from the club is expected to follow within days. Aston Villa manager Unai Emery, who had planned to build his midfield around Tielemans alongside Amadou Onana and Boubacar Kamara, will now need to find a replacement before the new season.
