LeBron James Trade/Free Agency: Latest Team News

LeBron James remains unsigned more than a week into NBA free agency, with several teams still waiting to hear where the 41-year-old will play his 24th professional season.

What's Happening?

James informed the Lakers in late June, through agent Rich Paul, that he would not return for a ninth season with the franchise. Lakers governor Jeanie Buss thanked James in a statement, crediting him with the team's 2020 championship. James responded on social media, calling his time with the team an honor.

Since then, James has become the top name remaining on the open market. According to CBS Sports, his list of possible destinations has grown to at least ten teams, including the Golden State Warriors, Miami Heat, Cleveland Cavaliers, Denver Nuggets, Minnesota Timberwolves, San Antonio Spurs, New York Knicks, Boston Celtics, Dallas Mavericks, and Philadelphia 76ers.

Why the Decision Is Taking So Long

Unlike past free-agency periods, James is not expected to command a max contract this time. CBS Sports reported that he is likely to sign for a portion of the mid-level exception or possibly a minimum deal, giving him more flexibility to take his time. NBA insider Marc Stein said on the "A Must Win Game" podcast that a resolution was unlikely to come quickly, suggesting the decision could stretch into NBA Summer League.

Bleacher Report noted that Rich Paul has been meeting with interested teams directly and relaying his findings back to James, which adds more time to the process. ESPN reported that the Cavaliers, Heat, and 76ers have been the three teams that "continue to come up" in recent conversations, per insider Shams Charania.

The Leading Contenders

The Cavaliers offer James a homecoming story, since he grew up nearby in Akron, Ohio, and has already played two stints with the franchise. Cleveland made the Eastern Conference Finals last season and recently locked up Donovan Mitchell to a contract extension. According to Heavy.com, free agent guard James Harden is reportedly willing to accept a smaller deal with the Cavaliers to help create space for James to join.

Miami has a long history with James as well, dating back to his championship years with the Heat. ESPN reported the Heat have at least two open roster spots and enough cap room to sign James while staying under the luxury tax's first apron.

The Warriors have also emerged as a serious option. Golden State forward Draymond Green declined his player option in a move that could clear room for James, according to Yahoo Sports. Warriors star Stephen Curry, who played alongside James on Team USA at the 2024 Olympics, publicly pitched James on joining Golden State this month.

What Happens Next

James has not indicated a firm timeline for his decision. Fox Sports reported growing buzz that an announcement could come soon, though similar predictions have circulated for more than a week without resolution. Whichever team lands James will likely need to make additional roster moves once his decision is final, since several other free agents and extensions around the league remain on hold pending his choice.
